Phoenix Teacher: “We’re just trying to cram as much as we can into your kids”

It’s that time of year again. Summer breaks are ending and school is back in session throughout many school districts in Maricopa County. Doesn’t it feel like the summer breaks just aren’t as long as they used to be? As it turns out we aren’t alone; many Phoenix residents are noticing the same thing. We talked to a local Phoenix school teacher Nicole Wooten and asked: “Why does it seem like the summer breaks are getting shorter?”

“In a few districts they have in fact gotten a bit shorter, it’s not your imagination. The reasoning is we’re just trying to cram as much into your kids as we can. In order to do that we need to extend the time we have with them. The more time we have to expose ourselves to your child, the more likely they’ll be receptive to our educational advances. You know, some teachers are just not truly invested in your child’s education. Teachers such as myself just want to do whatever it takes to get inside your child and have a long lasting impact on their lives.”

We also spoke to a few valley parents and asked them what they thought about the shortening of summer break times. Karen Bowers of Glendale says:

“I love it. It’s less money spent on childcare in the summer, and less time I have to spend with my child. Teachers make enough money as it is and only work nine months out of the year. That is complete bullshit in my opinion. They should work year-round like the rest of us. Teachers in Arizona are overpaid
